Global Workers Experience trainer Arielle Brouwer will offer the workshop “Finding your voice -how to be true to yourself, speak up, and be heard” and Speed coaching sessions “Silent feedback”

In the workshop Finding your voice, you will work on your professional performance through voice work, body language and embodiment techniques. By means of practical, lively and creative exercises you will learn to present yourself in a convincing and authentic way. You will experience how it is to make an impact using your voice and body, and what to do to handle your nerves. You will come to see what sort of impression you make on others, explore what impression you would like to make, and do practical exercises designed to align the two. This will allow you to work on your personal leadership skills so that you can speak up and be heard while staying true to yourself.

Speed coaching Silent feedback: In a three-minute session in which both participant and coach remain silent, the coach will give you feedback on your presence using eye-contact, posture, movement, and other nonverbal signals. The coach can serve as a witness, a mirror, an interlocutor, or another role -whatever is most appropriate at the moment and in the interaction as it arises. We ask you to embark on this session with an open mind and without any preconceptions (although you may have a question that you would like to ask yourself).

Ariëlle Brouwer coaches and develops workshops and training courses for professionals (including academics) focusing on careers, leadership and communication. She draws on her background in the theatre, martial arts training, and her extensive experience as a trainer and coach.

Workshop Effective Communication

maandag, april 7th, 2014

-how to handle the challenges in academia

organized for female academics by Female Faculty Network Twente (Twente University)

May 19 2014 from 14:00 – 17:00

INVITATION:

Do you want to know how to be heard, and how to get across your point effectively?

Do you want to learn more about the different styles of communication?

Do you want to have more influence and impact at the meeting table?

In the workshop Effective Communication you will get concrete insights and practical tips on how to deal with the challenges of communication (as a woman) in academia. We provide you with an insightful and very interactive program.

Communications theory

We start with a broad view of what communication really is and how gender and cultural aspects play their role. We focus on interaction at the meeting table: how to be heard and seen in an effective way?

Styles of communicating

During the workshop we will pay attention to different styles of communication, which you can adopt in a cross-cultural academic environment in a Dutch university, if you are a woman and want to be heard. Participants learn more about their own communication style and the styles of others, which helps to be more effective.

Applicable in work practice

After these personal insights we put the tips into practice in concrete role-play exercises. Here participants learn how to take an active role at the meeting table and to formulate an effective argument. The participants will gain insights and practice skills that will help them to use communication to solve challenges in a constructive way. To make the tips and insights practical the cases are based on situations that these female academics deal with at the workplace. For instance: getting your message across in a meeting, how to deal with miscommunication and difficult people.

Results

After the workshop the participants will have:

>  practical tips on how to improve your communication and be more effective in the academic environment

>  insight in their own communication style and gender and cultural aspects concerning communication

To promote learning in the workplace and to further customize the program, the workshop will be supplemented with a short preparation assignment and a useful reminder a week after the workshop.

About the trainers

Arielle Brouwer and Linda van der Wal are very familiar with the workings of academia. They have been providing training at Twente University since 2005. Both trainers have extensive experience in the field of training and they are familiar with the pitfalls regarding the careers of women in academia.

Thanks to the combination of two trainers it is possible to deliver personal coaching during the exercises, which will help to connect the learning and everyday work-experiences.

Following leadership – Leading followership (and tango)

dinsdag, december 18th, 2012

On January 28 2013 all employees of the Human Resources Department as well as staff members of the Faculty of Humanities of the Utrecht University are being invited to participate in the workshop ‘Following leadership – Leading followership’.
Topics of the workshop are: Who’s appointed to make decisions? How aware are we, as supporting staff, of our actual influence? Can we change roles according to the situation? Imagine a leader and a follower who, in close cooperation, both feel responsible for the whole and both having influence. How to move together and keep the right balance between leading and following?
The workshop will be interactive and experiential. It will be facilitated by Arielle Brouwer who wrote a blog on ‘following leadership’ which inspired Marie-Helene de Windt (HR advisor at Utrecht University) to ask Arielle to develop this workshop, in cooperation with a tango duo. The tango dancers will illustrate particular situations of the participants, and give a demonstration of typical ‘leading’ and ‘following’ qualities and pitfalls.
